Answers to levy referendum question gave insight

To the editor:

I had the opportunity to attend the New Ulm School Board candidate forum. This forum included six school board candidates. As expected each candidate communicated their desire to serve on the District 88 school board. The candidates presented their qualifications, experience and strengths.

Two related questions gave me special insight into the candidates. Candidates were asked what services provided by District 88 should be cut if there are budge deficits in the next few years. All six candidates gave similar answers. None articulated any programs or services that they felt should be cut. They all indicated they supported the current programs, extracurricular activities, services and staffing of the district. Candidates were also asked if they supported the operating levy referendum that will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. The operating levy does not generate any new funding. Rather, it maintains the districts current level of funding. I found it strange that candidates Michael Thom, Nick Thiel and Jo Flitter were uncertain if they would vote in favor of renewing the operating levy at its current level. Since not renewing the levy would lead to budget cuts, candidates that don’t support the referendum should have clear plans for budget cuts.

I favor the candidates who support the operating levy referendum: Amanda Groebner, Steve Gag and Melissa Sunderman. I also strongly support the operating levy referendum and urge all voters to support it with me.
