Wendinger can fill the shoes of previous mayors
To the editor:
As most of you know, there are five candidates running for the office of mayor of the city of New Ulm in the upcoming primary on Aug. 9. This position has some “big shoes to fill” as it relates to our past mayor, Bob Beussman, and current mayor, Terry Sveine. These two gentlemen have done a wonderful job representing the city of New Ulm, and I strongly believe that Ron Wendinger will carry on that tradition should he be elected the new mayor.
Unfortunately, I am unable to cast my vote for the mayoral position, as I reside just outside New Ulm’s city limits. If I was able to vote, my vote would be cast for Ron.
I have known Ron for many years. He was born in New Ulm and is a 1963 graduate of Cathedral High School. He is a veteran having served in the National Guard out of New Ulm from 1965-71. I served with him on the Executive Board of the New Ulm American Legion Post 132.
When COVID struck, Ron provided valuable suggestions and input, which allowed the Legion to survive those times. He took the leading role of converting our Legion meals — a major source of income — to “curbside” meals. This idea kept our “heads above water.”
I also serve with Ron on the Comrades of Valor Honor Guard, giving military honors to deceased veterans. Ron takes the lead by being the chaplain at these proceedings and presents to the family the American flag that has draped the casket of the veteran during the funeral service.
Ron has also been active in other organizations in the city, one of which being a 40-year member of the Concord Singers. His voice, along with the entire group of Concord Singers, brings smiles to many people’s faces in the community to visitors who frequent the city. He also has the ability to fluently speak and understand the German language.
Prior to moving off the farm and into the city some 21 years ago, Ron was a successful farmer in West Newton Township. As a lifetime resident of this area, he knows the challenges New Ulm faces, such as adequate day care and the continued revitalization of the downtown area and its businesses, strengthening the public image of our local law enforcement, and continuing to fortify our schools and churches for the good of families living here now or in the future.
If I could vote, my vote would be for Ron Wendinger for mayor of New Ulm.
