“Open Letter” questions

To the editor:

I have some questions about the “Open Letter (3-18-22)” to the editor concerning events at a recent NUHS basketball game. I’m still trying to understand who really composed the letter. Did the LGBTQIA+ community write the letter? By the way, it’s getting harder and harder to keep up with all the acronyms. The IA+ are new ones to me. I did some on-line research and discovered 17 different current acronyms (perhaps there are more). I might suggest somehow using XYZ when we run out of letters of the alphabet, or maybe the “+” covers that, I guess I’m not sure. Did all the approximately 163 “signers” collaboratively compose the letter? Did one individual compose the letter, and if so, which one? Why weren’t the “co-signers” listed as such? Did each “signer” individually provide their name, mailing address, and other contact information (phone number) as is required for the more normal letter writing format? It is most unusual for the editor to refer the reader to see the full list on line rather than printing them all.

I have asked several community members why I didn’t know such a letter was in the works, so I also might have the opportunity to sign? It is my understanding this effort originated on Facebook and was subsequently submitted as a letter to the editor. Please don’t get me wrong. I acknowledge the letter writer(s) should have the ability to vent their frustrations much the same as I do via a letter to the editor. This would seem to usher in a new era in letters to the editor. Maybe change in this regard is a good thing, maybe it’s not. This could quickly become a popularity contest to see which “group” can achieve the highest number of co-signers.

But then, pitting one “group” against another is exactly what the devil wants. Division and hate. We can and should resist the devils’ temptations. Jesus once said the greatest Commandment was Love. In this season of Lent, we could all use a little more Love.
