Communities need strong newspapers

To the editor:

During the past couple of decades many small town newspapers have disappeared. Others are barely hanging on with only one reporter doing almost everything to keep the paper going. Some big city papers have also gone through troubles. News via the internet is one problem since some people have dropped their subscriptions and get their news from technology instead. Maintaining advertising for financial support is another problem. A recent 60 Minutes report on TV confirmed all this.

We should feel fortunate to have an active newspaper in New Ulm with a great group of reporters, hardworking editor and publisher, and a terrific staff. It’s important to know what our Mayor said and what decisions were made by the City Council and the County Commissioners. Our community needs to know who won last night’s games, who passed away, what entertainment is available in town, what people think via letters to the editor, what’s in the ads, and much more.

I personally am very glad that The Journal keeps going. I hope it stays afloat and continues long into the future. I hope local folks continue to support the paper by maintaining their subscriptions and that people who have left our newspaper will return. Advertising from local concerns will help the paper with financial worries. New Ulm needs our local paper to help maintain our identity and we need to support the paper.
