Real ID alternative
To the editor:
For anyone struggling to get a Real ID, please consider a passport card. A passport card along with a standard driver’s license will serve all the same functions as a Real ID. The cost of the card is higher; $65 plus the cost of a photo, but it has 10 year validity, with a renewal rate of $30. You will need a certified copy of your birth certificate and a photo ID, but you will not be required to pay for and produce countless other certified copies, i.e. marriage certificates and divorce decrees. Divorce decrees are a lengthy document that includes additional personal in-depth information that has no bearing on the name change.
The US Department of State, issuers of passports, understands that Peggy and Peggie can be the same name, and would include Margaret in that scenario. Along with Bill and William, Bob and Robert, it is called “also known as”. So please anyone having issues getting the Real ID, please consider a passport card.
