Christmas kindness

To the editor:

Our family has a tradition of preparing German Roladen with red cabbage, pierogen and the famous potato dumplings. It’s a tradition carried on from my Oma and Opa. This year my sister-in-law in the cities and I in Mankato scoured the towns for the potato packages, with zero luck. My sister in law mentioned trying New Ulm, since it’s a German heritage community.

So I called Hy-Vee. I explained my situation to Rick Ruehling. So, he went and checked for them. He returned saying he didn’t have the brand we wanted but he did in fact have some he knew we would like.

Problem number two. I explained I’d just had knee surgery and asked if there was any way to get them sent to the Hy-Vee in Mankato. He immediately said, he or someone would have them delivered late that night! I couldn’t believe it. I was in shock! I couldn’t believe there were really people still out there willing to go the extra mile (in this case 45 minutes away). My husband went to pick them up the next day. Rick followed up with a phone call today to ensure everything went smoothly.

So I wanted to share this beautiful Christmas story as Mr. Ruehling went above and beyond to make sure our Christmas tradition was not interrupted this year! Kindness and Christ’s love is still flourishing in New Ulm, Minnesota! Rick, from The Dehning family to yours, thank you for letting me rest during my recovery and for blessing our family (total strangers) this Christmas! May Christ’s blessings be with you and yours!
