Memories of George’s

To the editor:

My first cousin, Dorothy Wech Christian (her mother was a Fleck), sent me the article “George’s Ballroom hits the bricks.” Her son is a great-nephew of my dad.

(I thank Clay Schuldt for the lengthy article. It is of interest to me as my father, Louis Fleck, built it with his partner, Leo Saffert, of the Fleck and Saffert Construction Company.)

I recall being in the bar with Mom and Dad and George Neuwirth, dancing in the ballroom and bowling with Lowell Brand. Thanks for the good memories.

Some time ago I donated to the museum a deck of playing cards I had that showed a picture of George’s and had Fleck and Saffert on it. I hope others can find memorabilia as well.

I can understand the demolition, so when I come to New Ulm, I still will be able to see the Clauss building that Dad built on Broadway Street. It was a Chevrolet dealer and last time I was in New Ulm I noticed it is a dental business.
