Respect, compassion, sensitivity

To the editor:

Opinion writer, Star Parker (12/4/20) believes gender identity is defined only by the sex assigned at birth rather than understand biological brain structure cause for transsexuality. Parker fears a Democrat-controlled Senate would restore rights for the LGBTQ community.

The current Trump administration has rolled back critical protections, specifically targeting transgender people by denying ability to openly serve in the military, access to critical health care, access to federally funded homeless shelters, housing discrimination and eviction, and failure to confront violence, especially against trans people of color.

The Equality Act is a priority for President-elect Joe Biden. All Americans should be treated with respect and dignity and be able to live without fear. Consider reading Building a Bridge by James Martin, SJ a Jesuit priest who advocates for the LGBTQ community by building a relationship of respect, compassion and sensitivity.
