Peace on earth?
To the editor:
Since the ongoing Afghan War is very newsworthy now, it seems appropriate to recall the great English poet Thomas Hardy’s comment in 1924 at Christmas:
“‘Peace upon earth!’ was said.
“We sing and pay a million priests to bring it.
“After two thousand years of Mass,
“we’ve got as far as poison gas.”
