Courtland missing an opportunity with water tower

To the editor:

I am very disappointed in the Courtland City Council’s decision to make our $1,000,000 water tower look boring and in my opinion ugly. We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to make a lasting impression on everyone that travels through our town. Why are we wasting it?

While I’ve certainly seen an improvement in the appearance of the town in the last 30 years, for right or wrong, outsiders still see our town at best as below average. I’ve seen the mock ups of the eagle and oak tree designs and both look great. You could even pick both and have one on the West side and one on the East. I believe they were the only suggestions given when the city council asked for ideas months ago. I know for a fact it won’t cost the city any additional money to paint the designs.

I strongly suggest they put the designs up on Facebook or Surveymonkey and let the people putting up the $1,000,000 decide what it should look like! Maybe we could get some of those drivers going to and from New Ulm and Mankato for work a reason to move to our town.

If we can’t change the mind of the city council, we have no chance of changing the minds of the outsiders traveling through.
