More than just cancer treatment

To the editor:

I recently was honored to be a part of the “Chillin’ with Your Cheerleaders” event sponsored by New Ulm Medical Center.

I wanted to clarify who is a part of our celebration day. All too often people that are treated in our department are lumped together as cancer patients. We are privileged to operate under the umbrella of the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute and our main focus is oncology/hematology treatment. HOWEVER, that is only a portion of the patient population we serve. We are also the infusion center and treat a myriad of other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, immune deficiency, kidney disease, anemia, vitamin deficiency, osteoporosis and many more. We value all of our patients, whether we have seen them only one day or we see them on an on-going basis.

Anyone who has stepped through our door throughout the year is sent an invitation to celebrate with us on this day of fun and fellowship. We appreciate all the support from NUMC to give us this special day to give back to all of our patients and their families outside of the clinic setting.
