Magnificent Mozart performance
To the editor:
I attended a presentation of Mozart’s Requiem in New Ulm’s Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. It was a beautiful synergy of music/edifice, a complete work of art, performed by the Saint Peter Choral Society — director: Sara McKay.
I. Requiem aeternam dona eis — Grant them eternal rest; the soprano soloist is outstanding, not only in voice but in expressive, articulate stage presence. III,2. Tuba mirum spargens sonum — The trumpet will sound; the quartet are excellent soloists, and nicely harmonic. III,6. Lacrimosa des illa — That day of tears and mourning. This is very moving, the measured intensity accelerating to the end. VII. Agnus Dei, qui tollis Peccata mundi — Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world — the glorious ending.
Every single person every single moment, seems to be performing at the highest professional levels, and with heart and soul.
This music for the souls of the dead is a magnificent, if sobering, launch into the next world.
