Special Vehicle Use meeting Wednesday

To the editor:

This Wednesday, March 29, the New Ulm City Council subcommittee on Special Vehicle Use will meet to discuss a proposal to allow the use of vehicles in this category on the city streets. The Special Vehicle Catetory covers four kinds of vehicles: the ATV, UTV, golf cart and mini truck. The Minnesota statute (169.045) that authorizes the use of these vehicles requires that the city must set up a permit program that follows the terms of the state law.

Under the proposal these vehicles will be allowed under the special permit to use some but not all of the city streets. No highways for specially designated streets can be used. Tehre will be other restrictions as to time of day, weather conditions, safety conditions etc., and those will be discussed at the meeting. Safety will be a high priority. Impact upon others, speed and noise will have to be kept at a minimum to make the use acceptable.

These are some of the things the committee will look at before making their report to the city council. The meeting will be at 4 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. I have been appointed to the sub-committee as one of two citizen members, and I hope to see other interested parties there too.
