THUMBS UP Human Rights Award a noble honor Wednesday, the New Ulm Human Rights Commission (HRC) held its annual Human Rights Award ceremony. Traditionally the award is given to an individual or group that contributes to the advancement of human rights in the community. This year the HRC broke tradition and gave the award to two recipients. Jeanine Hinsman, operator of New Ulm’s Own, and the local host committee for the Makatoh Reconciliation and Healing Horse Ride each received the award. Collegiate success Two basketball players from The Journal’s area saw their teams both make it to this year’s NCAA National Basketball Tournament. Madelia grad Ja’Sean Glover saw his Omaha Mavericks make it to the men’s tournament for the first time in program history, while Sleepy Eye Eye St. Mary’s grad Madison Mathiowetz and the South Dakota State Jackrabbits made it to the women’s tourney for the third year in a row. THUMBS UP Fasching season is here Fasching is a German carnival celebration that takes place before Lent. It often compared to Mardi Gras and it ends on Ash Wednesday. Since New Ulm has a high percentage of residents with German heritage, it is only fitting Fasching is celebrated here. The strips of colorful fabric that were placed downtown last Sunday are part of the festivities. On Friday, the Narren of New Ulm proceeded with their annual capture of the New Ulm Mayor. THUMBS UP Historical Center takes first step toward reality New Ulm is one step closer to getting a historical center at Johnson Park. The Park and Rec approved a design concept for a proposed historical center Monday. The design requires city council approval before the New Ulm Baseball Association (NUBA) can begin fundraising for the project, but this is an exciting first step. THUMBS UP Baggin’ in the Street moves forward The 2nd annual Baggin’ in the Street bean bag tournament will move forward Saturday despite a forecast for snow. This is the correct choice. The entire reason for the tournament is give people a reason to get outside during the winter months. To get the full impact, the tournament should be held during a snowstorm. The New Ulm Area Chamber made the official announcement at a surprised presentation Thursday. Kamm is really the perfect choice to receive the award.
