New pope Leo XIV Thursday, Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected the new pope. He has taken on the name Leo XIV. Even for non-Catholics, this is an interesting development. Leo XIV is the first pope in history to come from the United States, but what is most intriguing is how quickly he was chosen by the papal conclave. Prevost was chosen by the cardinals within a day of the conclave starting. That is unusual in modern times. THUMBS UP New Ulm a 2024 Tree City USA for 21st year New Ulm once again received Tree City USA recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation. This is the 21st time New Ulm has received the honor and it is fairly impressive. For over two decades New Ulm was able to maintain Tree City USA status. In order to qualify a city must have a tree commission, tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and participate in an Arbor Day celebration. THUMBS UP MN Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony held Friday, The Minnesota Music Hall of Fame (MMHF) officially inducted six new members. Marv Nissel, Augie Garcia, The Castaways, Herb Pihofer, Mark Kreitzer and Myron Muehlbauer will join over 200 other inductees since the hall opened in 1989. Each of the new inductees will receive a new display at the MMHF located at 27, N. Broadway. The new displays can be seen during the special 2025 Inductee Showcase from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. THUMBS UP Time to celebrating Easter weekend Sunday is Easter and that’s reason enough to celebrate. Outside of the religious observations at area churches on Sunday, there are a few Easter events being held on Saturday. Easter egg hunts were scheduled in New Ulm Ulm’s Harman Park; Sleepy Eye’s Allison Park; Fairfax’s St. John’s church grounds and Hanska’s City Park. THUMBS DOWN New Ulm’s Happy Joe’s abruptly closes Last Saturday, residents of New Ulm were shocked and disappointed to learn Happy Joe’s closed. A simple hand written note was placed inside the front door, citing unforeseen circumstances. The Happy Joe’s franchise has been part of the community for decades and many people were upset by the sudden closure, with no real explanation.
