Tragedy in Hanska

The community of Hanska was hit by unspeakable tragedy last week following the double homicide of Justin Reinarts and Tabitha Trescott. There are no words to describe the depth of this loss.

Reinarts and Trescott were valuable and cherished members of Brown County and to lose them so suddenly is difficult to understand and raises questions as to why it was not prevented. The alleged suspect in this crime had previously been convicted of multiple assaults and was currently facing charges for stalking. This suspects’ criminal record is one red flag after another. It makes no sense why he was given this many chances to reoffend. His quick capture after allegedly committing this double-murder comes a little too late for the victims and their families.

The federal shut down continues

The shutdown of the federal government that began Oct. 1 is now officially the longest in United States history. The shutdown began over a failure to pass appropriation legislation for the 2026 fiscal year. Senate Democrats are blocking a resolution from the House of Representatives to fund the government because the resolution does not extend Affordable Care Act subsidies that were expanded under the American Rescue Plan Act from 2021.

This has led to a month-long stalemate that has led to many federal employees being furloughed and cuts to programs that many Americans rely upon including SNAP and Energy Assistance Programs. Recent court rulings could force the Trump administration to fully fund SNAP payments in November, but these rulings are being appealed. It is a disappointing series of events that shows the continued dysfunction of the federal government and its failures to help the constituents who need it.

Food Shelf steps up

The New Ulm Area Emergency Food Shelf recently began a Bakery Giveaway program to expand its food giveaway. On Tuesdays and Thursdays individuals can come collect bakery products and other food items the food shelf has in abundance for free.

These Bakery Giveaways are not counted as client visits and anyone can take advantage of it, not just food shelf clients. This program was started in response to the continued government shutdown and threats to SNAP benefits. It’s wonderful that a local nonprofit is able to step-up and fill in the gaps for those in need.

The New Ulm Food Shelf has acknowledged receiving extra cash donations from citizens within the last few days. It shows there are many local people who are willing to support those in need.

Starting at $4.50/week.
