NU Emergency Food Shelf prepared to help
The New Ulm Emergency Food Shelf is prepared to handle an influx of new clients. Executive Director Brad Kirk confirmed that the food shelf is well-stocked, thanks to the support of donors and the help of volunteers. Currently, the food shelter assists around 160 families each month. Kirk is confident that it could be expanded if other food assistance programs are impacted by the government shutdown. Recently, it was reported that funding for SNAP would only last through the end of October. If the government does not reopen by November, many benefits could be cut. New Ulm is fortunate to have a strong nonprofit able to step in when the federal government comes up short.

NU Rotary Club’s ethics workshop tackles AI questions
Every year, the New Ulm Rotary Club hosts an ethics workshop for area high school students. The workshop itself is a great idea. Introducing young people to ethical questions, especially in the business world, is a good idea. For some students, it might be the first time they explore these ideas. This year, the workshop also introduced questions about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how people are trying to program ethics into the technology. The seminar was not for or against AI, but simply wanted students to think about how this technology is programmed and the importance of human input. This is an extremely valuable inclusion in the conversation of ethics. AI technology is not going away. It will be a part of these students’ lives going forward. It is a wise decision to introduce these ethical conversations early and often.
