New equipment at Washington Park
celebrated
On Thursday Mayor Kathleen Backer and elementary students at St. Anthony’s celebrated the new playground equipment at Washington Park during a ribbon cutting ceremony. The school’s 1st and third-grade students had a hand in selecting the new equipment. The Park and Recreation Department showed the students three design concepts and had them vote on their favorite. This means the equipment would be popular with the kids most likely to use it. The St. Anthony students were pleased with the new equipment, but it was popular with the older students too. Several Cathedral High School students were lounging in the playground’s new swing and pod features before the school’s homecoming parade. Park and Rec director Joey Schugel said certain features on the playground were designed with teens in mind. The result is an inclusive park for every age group.

Residential parking permit coming soon
During a recent New Ulm City Council work session it was proposed a new type of parking permit be created for residents living downtown without off street parking. Residents with this permit would be exempt from hourly parking limits. In theory, a person with the permit could park in the city hall parking lot for 24 hours. The exemption would not apply to downtown Minnesota Street during business hours, but the permit would allow a vehicle to be parked overnight on downtown Minnesota Street. It’s a small but simple solution to the growing number of residents who live downtown.

Tea for Cancer benefit to be held Sunday
This Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. the Best Western Plus will host the 6th Annual Tea for Cancer Gala. The gala is designed to raise funds for local cancer patients. Since August 2022, the benefit has awarded over $90,000 to over 90 families in the New Ulm area. The gala is a wonderful event that not only raises money for a great cause, but is extremely fun. Attendees are encouraged to come dress in their best outfit, complete with fancy hats. The more lavish, the better. Each year, the Tea for Cancer Gala not only raises funds, but hope for those who need it most.
