New Ulm a 2024 Tree City USA for 21st year
New Ulm once again received Tree City USA recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation. This is the 21st time New Ulm has received the honor and it is fairly impressive. For over two decades New Ulm was able to maintain Tree City USA status. In order to qualify a city must have a tree commission, tree ordinance, spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and participate in an Arbor Day celebration. Meeting these might seem relatively easy, but to consistently do it year after year takes commitment.

Newly discovered Wanda Gág art comes to New Ulm
A new cache of original Wanda Gág art was discovered at an estate sale in Arizona several years ago and this week it was sent back to New Ulm. The art includes six original storyboard drawings for Wanda Gág’s 1935 book “Gone is Gone.” The six drawings are each 18 inch by 24 inches and feature a drawing from “Gone is Gone” with handwritten notes on the back. The notes include the text that would later accompany the picture in the completed book. The six drawings will go to the Wanda Gág House Association in New Ulm. The drawings will be a wonderful addition to the Wanda Gág House. These early concept drawings will lend insight into the artist’s process.

Apartment project at George’s Ballroom site moves forward
New architectural renderings of a residential redevelopment project planned at the former George’s Ballroom property was recently submitted to the Journal. The new rendering depicts the project as a 104-unit Art Deco apartment building that will still feature the historic red vertical George’s sign. The new architectural rendering is evidence the project is moving forward. Coldwell Banker Commercial (CBC) Fisher Group Managing Director Dain Fisher is hopeful construction will begin in fall.
