No matter where you drive these days in Minnesota, or for that matter — across the nation — road construction is hot and heavy this summer.

Two construction projects are underway in New Ulm. The 20th South Street construction is led by the city and the Highway 14 roundabout is led by MnDOT.

A Highway 4 project between St. James and Sleepy Eye includes roadway, bridge and drainage improvements. In addition to resurfacing approximately 25 miles of roadway, three bridges will be replaced.

Driving through Minneapolis and St. Paul is no fun as well with several construction projects underway in the Twin Cities.

Driving through and around construction zones can be frustrating for drivers. However, the work is necessary for smoother travel in the future. Driving recklessly in a construction zone can lead to disastrous situations for driver and construction workers.

MnDot recommends drivers to slow down and drive with caution. It also recommends drivers to follow these safe driving tips:

Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.

• Drive undistracted. Avoid using phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating – while in work zones.

• Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.

• Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.

• Do the zipper merge.

• Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.

• Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.

• Expect work zones to constantly change. Day to day you could experience lane shifts, closures, narrower lanes, moving workers and vehicles.

We urge drivers to keep these tips in mind when traveling in southwest Minnesota and other parts of the state this summer.
