Service to Ag

Randy and Carol Schroeder were presented with the New Ulm Farm City Hub Club Service to Agriculture Award Monday. Randy has been the club’s membership chairman since 2012 and served a year as club vice president. He is a current board member. Both Randy and Carol volunteer at the Farm Show and Bavarian Blast, and Randy works the Cash Wise Brat Stand. Congratulations!

Laundry Love

Loads of love and clean laundry were provided to New Ulm area low-income and no-income families Tuesday. Laundry Love, a movement that partners with groups, schools and local laundromats to wash the clothes of those in need, launched its first trial run at the Mega Wash Maytag laundromat. We commend the organizers for their caring and community spirit.

Businesses of Year

The New Ulm Area Chamber of Commerce Board broke with tradition during its annual meeting Thursday, by naming two businesses of the year for 2019, rather than just one. Sewing Seeds Quilt Company and Citizens Bank were both named Business of the Year. Chamber Board remember Heather Hammer said by naming two businesses, the Chamber can recognize a small business like Sewing Seeds and a larger business like Citizens Bank. Sewing Seeds Quilt Company was established in 2012 by Ann Wendinger, Jackie Forst and Cindy Wendinger. In a few short years they rose to the top by receiving National recognition as a top 10 shop in a 2015 issue of Better Homes and Gardens. Citizens Bank is one of the oldest banks in Minnesota, having been chartered in 1876. Each in their own way, they deserve the recognition!

Shutdown deal

Congress and President Donald Trump agreed to a deal Friday to reopen the government for three weeks. Pressure had been building among both parties to reopen agencies immediately and pay hundreds of thousands of beleaguered federal workers while bargainers hunt for a deal. We hope, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, that there will be “good-faith negotiations over the next three weeks to try to resolve our differences” on border security. Federal employees and their families deserve to eat, just like the rest of us.
