Get the session started soon

It sounds like the Minnesota Legislature’s latest special session should be starting soon. Gov. Mark Dayton announced Friday that the basic agreements have been reached. Now it’s just a matter of all the legislative leaders and the governor reviewing the details and signing off on exactly what will be discussed and what actions will be taken.

And then legislators will be called back to someplace in St. Paul besides the state capitol building to review and vote on the agreement, and the work that should have been done by May 18 will be completed. No doubt the governor and legislative leaders will give themselves a pat on the back for getting things done before the government would have to be partially shut down on July 1.

The governor said Wednesday that one mark of a compromise is that nobody is really happy. He was probably referring to the politicians involved in making the decision. The people who elected them have been unhappy with their performance for a long time now.

So, the best thing the politicians can do now is sign the agreements and get this exercise in unhappiness done with as soon as possible.
