Clinton a lock for Democratic nod

Hillary Rodham Clinton, former first lady, former senator, former secretary of state, made official on Sunday what everyone knew she was going to do, announcing in a video that she will seek the office of President of the United States.

At this point there doesn’t seem to be a single viable challenger within her party. That could change, of course. After all, Barack Obama came from way behind in 2008 to derail her candidacy plans then.

No, it seems Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic standard bearer. She is by no means a perfect candidate. Her record, going all the way back to the Bill Clinton administration, offers any number of mistakes, misjudgments and misstatements for those who want to challenge her.

The most serious challenge, however, will come from the Republican side. The Republicans have another glut of potential candidates. Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul have already announced, and half a dozen more are seriously considering it.

Republicans had the same kind of battle royal the last couple of elections, and it hasn’t worked well for them. The multitude of candidates speaks to serious philosophical splits within the party. Unless they can come together as a party, it may be another Clinton taking the oath of office in January 2017.
