City Council, Fourth Ward tossup

In the New Ulm City Council 4th Ward race, voters have a choice between two strong candidates, two men with similar backgrounds asnatives of New Ulm, who we think are well suited to the job of representing their ward.

The incumbent, Councilor Ken RockVam, has served two four-year terms on the council. His opponent is Larry Mack, who has been serving on the City Planning Commission.

RockVam has served the council well over the past eight years. He has often been the one keeping an eye on the city’s bottom line, pushing for lower spending and tax levies in the budget where possible, but one who is not averse to spending money for needed services like a fully staffed police department or a well equipped fire department. He is an accessible and responsive councilor who listens to the residents of his ward. He is in his 70s, but his energy and willingness to work hard on the council are still strong.

Mack presents an interesting choice for voters. Like RockVam he is very interested in serving the city, well aquainted with many of the issues through his Planning Commission work, and is someone who will listen carefully to constituents and consider all opinions before making up his mind. And at about half RockVam’s age, he is the kind of new blood that any government body needs every once in a while.

So, voters have a chance to decide. RockVam has indicated this is likely his last term, and that Mack will have much time in the future. Is it time for a changing of the guard? Should voters re-elect RockVam and hope that Mack is still interested in the job in four years?

It is a tough decision, and one we feel the voters need to make for themselves.
