A well attended public hearing on counties “shotgun-only” status
On Wednesday, the Brown County Law Enforcement Center training room was full of firearm enthusiasts sharing their opinions on the “shotgun-only” status of Brown County at public hearing. The Minnesota Legislature repealed the “shotgun-only” zone for deer hunting in the state. The change allows hunters to use rifles statewide, but counties have the right to remain shotgun-only by passing an ordinance. Based on the high interest on this issue, Brown County Commission held the public hearing to hear what people had to say. After two hours of discussion a hand count had 32 favoring keeping Brown County shotgun only and 23 favoring allowing rifles. Commissioners have until May 5 to decide to retain the restriction. Often public hearings have low attendance. It is exciting to hear such public passionate about an issue.

New community collage at library
In 2024, a new community collage was installed near the intersection of Center Street and Minnesota Street. The collage featured portraits of hundreds of New Ulm citizens taken by photographer Josh Madson. The collage is a fun addition to downtown New Ulm, that is a fitting tribute to the people in our community. On Saturday, a duplicate of the collage will be displayed at the New Ulm Library on a special banner. The collage will be located in the hallway near the children’s library. Bringing the collage to the library is a wonderful idea as it is a major community hub that will be enjoyed by many for years to come.

Weekend storm to disrupt plans
Thursday night and Friday morning New Ulm was hit by powerful winds resulting in some damage to trees, leaving debris in the streets. This windstorm seems to only be the start of inclement weather. The National Weather Services is predicting a major winter storm to hit Saturday night and continue through Sunday. The snow is expected to be heavy and with the winds that have already swept through the area, it could be the worst blizzard of the year. These late season blizzards are always frustrating, when spring seems so close but this storm is especially annoying for its disruption of events. Saturday, New Ulm is hosting the annual Farm Show at the Civic Center, Trade Fair Living History event at Royal Oak Event Center and a Wanda Gag birthday celebration at the library. It is not clear how the weather will impact these events, but some events have already been canceled. State Street Theater was forced to postpone Jennifer Grimm’s tribute to Judy Garland.
