What you need to know about marijuana use

Many Minnesotans have probably seen media coverage over the last two years talking about the legalization of marijuana (cannabis). In August of 2023, Minnesota became the 23rd state to legalize adult-use marijuana. Within the next year, store fronts will be opening their doors across the state selling marijuana products.

While legal, there are risks associated with the use of marijuana that can impact both the health and quality of life for those who use it. Marijuana has high concentrations of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which has intoxicating and mind-altering effects. The higher the concentration of THC in a product, the higher intoxicating effect it has and the higher the risk for dependency or cannabis use disorder.

Marijuana can also negatively impact your memory, thinking skills, and performance. The method of use can also create health concerns. For example, smoking marijuana can cause lung inflammation, slowed breathing, and respiratory infections while consuming edibles can lead to nausea and stomach pains. In adolescent use, the risk of addiction increases, and brain development can be altered.

There are ways for adults to use marijuana safely and reduce potential risks. It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to feel the effects of marijuana when consuming it in food or drink, making it easy to take too much.

When using edibles, take low doses at a slow pace and if drinking THC-infused beverages, avoid mixing with alcohol. If smoking, do not smoke with tobacco, which can increase respiratory complications. Store marijuana products in a locked container out of the reach of children to avoid unintentional poisoning.

If you are pregnant or nursing, try to avoid use as it could cause harm to the unborn child, such as low birth weight or pre-term births. Lastly, when using marijuana products, do not operate a vehicle. Impairment after smoking marijuana can last up to six hours and even longer when using edibles.

Understanding marijuana use and its effects is important for making informed decisions about its consumption. By being aware of the potential risks, knowing your limits, and using marijuana responsibly, you can help ensure a safer experience. It is important to stay informed and make choices that prioritize your health and well-being.
