Thumbs Up/Down

Season of giving

Thumbs Up: With the late date for Thanksgiving this year, the holiday shopping season is a little shorter than usual. We hope people will find time to help those who may be suffering this season.

There are people hurting because they have lost someone this year and their Christmas will not be the same. Support them.

There are people who cannot give gifts to their children because they cannot afford them. Help them out. Sertoma Club’s Santa’s Closet is a good way to help.

There are people who do not have enough to eat. Donate to the New Ulm Food Shelf and other charities.

You have it in your power to make a difference this holiday season. Your efforts matter.

Dangerous duty

Thumbs Down: A Minnesota National Guard helicopter crashed on Thursday during what was supposed to be a routine maintenance flight. The three soldiers aboard were killed.

This tragedy points to the fact that military service, even in peacetime, can be dangerous, and the men and women who serve put their lives on the line for us every day.

“These fine soldiers served with distinction and put others before themselves,” Governor Tim Walz said in a proclamation. “The people of Minnesota honor these soldiers for their dedicated service, pray for their loved ones, and recognize their ultimate sacrifice to our state and country.”

Let us all join in honoring the three who died, and all who take on the job of protecting our nation.
