Robert Bruce Martens
April 24, 1955-Nov. 26, 2025
RICHMOND, VA–With great sadness, we announce the passing of Robert Bruce Martens, he, died unexpectedly due to medical complications at the age of 70, in Richmond Virginia on November 26, 2025. He is survived by brothers Dave (Cindy), Dan (Karen) and John. He was preceded in death by parents Robert and Carol in 2019. We also want to acknowledge and thank a great friend of Rob’s for many years, Mary “Charlie” King.
Rob was born April 24, 1955, in St Peter, MN. The family lived in Nicollet, Minnesota for all of their formative years. Their lives circled around the veterinary career of Robert Sr and Carol, as they were all involved in answering phones, riding along on calls, and even assisting in surgeries. This is probably where Robert Jr obtained his love of animals, especially dogs and birds. Rob participated and excelled in wrestling, football, and playing saxophone during his high school years and graduated from Nicollet High School in 1973. Rob went to Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, after high school where he obtained his undergraduate degree. From there Rob went to Chicago for work, then spent time in San Diego and San Francisco obtaining several Graduate degrees in business and political science. Rob started his own company to handle Mergers and Acquisitions which is what he worked at for the remainder of his life. There were many ups and downs for his business but his main claim to fame was the acquisition of Fannie Mae candies by Fanny Farmer candies, of which Rob negotiated. Rob moved to Richmond Virginia where he spent the remaining years of his life working, following Minnesota sports, walking dogs, and feeding many birds in his bird feeders. Rob enjoyed helping those less fortunate around Richmond as he often gave food and money to those he saw on the streets and some favorite friends. He was known for making a large turkey on Thanksgiving and sharing with those around him. He will also be remembered for his gift of conversation, strong opinions on many subjects, a good heart and kindness towards others. He is gone too soon and will be missed.
The family plans to have a celebration of life sometime Spring of 2026. Memorials or donations are recommended to be sent to your local Humane Society.
