Lanny Dean Ries was born December 25, 1962, in New Ulm. Growing up in New Ulm, he attended District 51 and St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School before continuing on to New Ulm High School. Lanny later moved to Texas, where he graduated from Redwater High School in 1981. After school, Lanny built a long and steady career with Sysco Foods in Beaumont, Texas. He took pride in his work and earned his way into the role of warehouse manager. Lanny later returned home to New Ulm and joined 3M, where he worked for 15 years before retiring in 2021. No matter what job he held, Lanny was someone people could count on. Outside of work, Lanny had a variety of interests and hobbies. He loved classic rock and played guitar when he could. He was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan who never lost faith in his team. In the kitchen, or more often at the grill, Lanny was known for his barbecue, and he enjoyed cooking for others as much as he enjoyed the meal itself. At the end of the day, nothing beat settling in for a good John Wayne western.

Lanny was thoughtful, loyal, and kind. He was the sort of person who would give more than he ever asked for. He was a steady provider and a gentleman, but he also had a wild streak that made him fun to be around–a little bit of a hell raiser paired with a quick sense of humor and a heart that landed in the right place. Lanny leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a circle of people who loved him for exactly who he was. His stories, his laugh, and his easy way of caring for others will stay with those who knew him. His family and friends take comfort in knowing that the moments they shared with him were genuine, lasting, and filled with love. Blessed be his memory.
