Mildred May Doering
Mildred May Doering, a beloved resident of New Ulm (formerly Edina), passed away on November 19, 2025, at the age of 94,leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness.
Born on September 26, 1931, in Bismarck Township, Sibley County, Mildred was raised on a farm owned by her parents, Alice Stark and Otto Doering. Her early education began at District #70, situated at the corner of her grandparents’ farm. She later completed most of her elementary and high school education in the Gibbon Public Schools, graduating in 1950.
After working for Northwestern Bell Telephone in Gibbon during her senior year and a year thereafter, she completed the Private Secretarial course at the Minnesota School of Business while residing with and assisting Dr. and Mrs. Dale Correa.Subsequently, she worked for various medical professionals,including orthopedists, urologists, internists, a food broker,and finally, for the Pillsbury Company. During this period, she was married for three years and later divorced to Louis R.Nezzer, Jr. In 1960, she embarked on a full-time study journey at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, graduating with her Bachelor’s degree in French in 1965. She taught French at the Robbinsdale Junior High School from 1965 to 1969 before pursuing full-time study in the School of Management at the University of Minnesota. Eventually, she earned her Ph.D. in Industrial Relations in 1978. She taught in the School of Management at Kansas State (4 years) and Syracuse University (20years).
After retiring to Minnesota, genealogy became her passion,leading to the publication of several hardcover books on the Stark, Doering, and Lietzau family histories.
She engaged in a diverse range of activities and traveled extensively. She had a fondness for dancing, cross-country and downhill skiing, tennis, and general exercise. She was also an avid reader and enjoyed attending the symphony. Alain Breyton was her longtime special friend, and they shared a love for travel, particularly visiting much of France and its neighboring countries, including Morocco.
Preceded in death were her parents, Otto Doering and Alice Stark Doering Heller, stepfather Marvin H. Heller, brothers Waldemar Doering and Larry Heller, and sister-in-law Andrea Heller. She is survived by siblings Eileen Kokesch of New Ulm and Norman Doering (Jean Anderson) of Brownton. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Mildred’s life was filled with joy and fulfillment, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Her cremated remains wil1 be interred in her parents’ plot at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church cemetery in Moltke Township,Sibley County. The church is located north of Gibbon, Minnesota.A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 6,2025, at the New Ulm Community Center, located at 600 N. German St., New Ulm. Visitation will be held from 10 am to 12 pm,followed by a short program and a luncheon to celebrate her life.
