Wallace “Wally” Beranek

GIBBON–Wallace “Wally” Beranek, age 82, of Gibbon passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2025 at the New Ulm Medical Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 24, 2025 at St. George Catholic Church in St. George. Father Tanner Thooft will celebrate the Mass. Burial will follow in the church cemetery where the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard will provide full military honors.

Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2025 at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes – North Chapel in New Ulm. Wally is survived by his wife of over 56 years, Donna Rae Beranek; children, Tim Beranek of Gibbon, Sheila (Kelly) Katzung of Owatonna; grandchildren, Kayle (Scott) Balzer, Jacob (Kalley) Katzung, Joshua Katzung, Jace (Amy Jentges) Katzung; great-grandchildren, Brantley and Brinley Balzer, Vincent Katzung; sisters, Esther Schwab, Virginia Herring, Grace (Steve) Rubischko, Chubby (Jerry) Carlson; sisters-in-law, Noreen Beranek, Cindy Beranek; brothers-in-law, Myron (Whitey), Wesley (Laurie), Daniel (Sue), Harlan (Nita), Lowell (Connie), Bobby (Lori), Brian (Janee) Helget; sisters-in-law, Kathy Ludewig, Linda Helget, Luella Ricke, LaNatte (Bill) Hanson, Rolene (Mark) Fromm, Janice (Jon) Schauman, Betsy (Randy) Jensen; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Edwin & Alice Helget; brothers, Andrew, Benedict Jr., Gerald Beranek; brothers-in-law, Donald Ludewig, Eldon Helget, Tom Ricke, Francis Schwab, Larry Herring; and many other extended family.

Wallace F. Beranek was born December 12, 1942 to Benedict and Valeria (Brey) Beranek in New Ulm. He graduated from Holy Trinity High School in New Ulm and enlisted in the United States Army National Guard. Wally served from 1960-1964, earning the rank of Sp4. On June 5, 1969, Wally was united in marriage to the love of his life, Donna Rae Helget, at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. Their union was blessed with two children. In addition to being a husband and father, Wally owned and operated Wally’s Bar and B&W Plumbing. He also worked at 3M, Hutch Tech, and Community Insurance Company. Outside of work, Wally enjoyed playing in a card club, listening to polka music, and spending time with his many family and friends. Wally will be dearly missed by those that knew him.
