Wallace “Wally” Bastian

NEW ULM–Wallace “Wally” Bastian, age 92, of New Ulm, died on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at Evergreen Home at Swam Lake in Minnetonka.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the St. George Catholic Church in St. George, with Father Tanner Thooft celebrating the mass. Burial will follow in the St. George Catholic Cemetery. New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard will provide full military honors. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home – NORTH Chapel in New Ulm. Wally is survived by his sons, Brian Bastian of St. Cloud and Allan Bastian of Shakopee; two grandchildren, Claire (Tyler) Hauser of Buffalo and Katherine Bastian of Plymouth; great-grandchild, Thatcher Hauser; sisters, Gervaise Bastian of Fort Wayne, IN, Geraldine (Bert) Hauber of Las Vegas, NV; brothers, Cletus Bastian of Austin, Thomas Bastian of Marshall.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bonita “Bonnie” Bastian; brothers Ambrose Bastian and LeRoy Bastian; and sister Mary Jo Bastian.

Wallace Walter Bastian was born on May 13, 1933, in Ridgely Township in Nicollet County to Edwin and Margaret (Steinbach) Bastian. He attended grade school in St. George Catholic Grade School and then graduated from Cathedral High School in New Ulm. Wally retired from Caterpillar Paving in 1996. He was united in marriage to Bonita “Bonnie” Altmann on June 7, 1962, at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm. Wally was a member of St. George Catholic Church, CAA, and American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, hunting, woodworking, and watching sports. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.
