She attended country school for six years and graduated from Morgan High School. Caroline worked many years at the Orchid Inn in Sleepy Eye and started working at Advertising Unlimited, Inc. on August 24, 1987, in housekeeping where she worked for about 20 years.
Caroline enjoyed spending time with her family. Baking, crafts, quilting, ceramics, reading and dancing were among her favorites through the years. Her hobbies also included taking pictures, catching up with friends on Facebook and gathering information on family history. But her absolute favorite pastime was listening to old time music, especially if it was played by her dear husband, Ed.
Caroline married Edward Mathiowetz from Sleepy Eye on May 18, 1960, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Clements. They farmed near Sleepy Eye and raised three daughters.
Caroline is survived by her daughters, Brenda (Mark) Sand of Avon, MN, Teresa (friend Lavern Hauser) of New Ulm, MN and Joan (Marc) Barkosky of Amboy, MN; grandchildren, Brandon (Gemma) Sand, Bryan (special friend Erin Ellefson) Sand, Brittany (Brian) Stay, Blake (Thuan) Sand, Matthew and Jesse Sand, Seth (Cherie) Barkosky, Cassaundra, Breanna, Victoria, Vanessa, and Tabitha Barkosky; great-grandchildren, Jordyn, Kyrah, Damian and Avery Sand, Aubree, Sebastian, and Lila Stay, and Evelynn and Grayson Barkosky.
She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 64 years, Edward Mathiowetz; parents, Henry and Theresa Rothmeier; brothers, Clarence and Richard Rothmeier; sister, Delores Bassuyt; sister-in-law; Devota Rothmeier; and brother-in-law, Donald Bassuyt.
