Mardell was born on August 27, 1942 to Albert and Elsie (Miller) Ries in New Ulm. She grew up on a family farm in Lafayette Township in Nicollet County. She attended Holy Trinity Elementary, graduated from Cathedral High School in 1960, and received her BA at Emporia State Teachers College, Kansas in 1968. After college, Mardell worked as a dental assistant with Dr. Ronald Albright. She transitioned to social work for Traverse Country, and then Sibley County from 1968-1973 — taking great pride in helping those in need. Later she worked at the New Ulm Public Library from 1990-2009. Mardell met Larry Stueber dancing at a local wedding. The two married in June of 1973 and had two children, Darren and Heidi. She retired in 2009 and delighted in spending time with her 6 grandchildren. She found joy in the quiet and meaningful pleasures of life. Loved watching birds in the backyard, taking comfort in their daily visits. She had a sharp eye for detail and patience that showed in the beautiful quilts she created and the puzzles she completed. She also enjoyed attending local theater productions and live music performances, appreciating the creativity and community they brought.

She is survived by her husband, Larry Stueber; and her sisters, La Vonne Grussendorf and Sharon Johnson. She is also survived by her children, Darren Stueber and his wife My Phung (parents of Chloe and Elsa); along with Heidi Coudron and her husband Glen (parents of Emily, Isaac, Hannah, and Evelyn).

Mardell is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Elsie Ries; brothers, Maury, David, and Ronald Ries; brothers-in-law, Robert Grussendorf and Earl Johnson; and sisters-in-law, Clara, Karen, and Barb Ries.
