Funeral service will take place on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Callahan Fay Caswell Funeral Home in Massachusetts. Fred is survived by his wife of 23 years, Karen L. Essex; his mother-in-law, Astrid Essex; his step-son, Zachariah Mikkila; his siblings, Roy Joel, Vern Joel, Miron Joel, Martin Joel, Linda Kral, and Marian Kamm all of Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Fred Alan Joel was born August 23, 1960, in New Ulm to LeRoy M and Verna (Hartmann) Joel. Growing up in New Ulm, Fred was the youngest of seven and was a 1978 graduate from Cathedral High School. After high school his adventures took in him on a road trip east, landing him a manager position for a car rental and gas station business with his brother. Fred worked in customer service for the last seven years at Tasse’s Fuel, prior to that he worked 24 years for the Granite Group, as an outside salesman. Fred loved being outdoors, hunting and fishing, or just relaxing on his front porch. He also enjoyed playing cards and up, until a few years ago used to love riding his motorcycle. Fred was a great friend and would always help anyone who was in need. He was loved by so many and will be greatly missed. Blessed be his memory.
