NEW ULM–Larry “Spuds” Joseph Rathmann, age 77 of New Ulm died peacefully surrounded by Family and friends on May 10, 2025, at St. Gertrude’s – Benedictine Living Community in Shakopee, MN.
Mass of Christian burial will take place at 12 p.m. on Friday, June 6, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm. Ennichement will follow at 2 p.m. in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery-Columbarium where the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard will provide full military honors. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Friday, June 6th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church prior to the Mass. Larry Joseph Rathmann was born June 5, 1947, in New Ulm, Minnesota to Benjamin and Angela (Huhn) Rathmann. He grew up in Gibbon, Minnesota and graduated from Gibbon High School in 1965. Soon after high school, Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country from January of 1966, until he was honorably discharged in May of 1969. On July 25, 1970, Larry was united in marriage to Linda Hemmingsen at St. Willibrord’s Catholic Church in Gibbon. Their union was blessed with two sons, whom they raised together in New Ulm. Larry dedicated over 40 years of his career to Midwest Commodities, where he was known for his hard work and reliability. His life centered around faith, family, and sports. He took great joy in supporting his children and grandchildren, never missing a chance to attend their games and events. In his free time, Larry enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cards with family and friends and spending time outdoors. He was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm, where his faith remained present throughout his life. Larry was a loving husband, a wonderful father, grandfather and friend and he will be remembered for his steady presence, his giving heart, and dedication to those he loved. We will all miss him dearly. May his memory continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Larry is survived by his sons, Lonny (Kirsten) Rathmann of Shakopee & Landon Rathmann of New Ulm, Michelle Rathmann; his grandchildren, Abby, Ryan and Mya Rathmann and Kirsten McDonald; his sister, Rosemary Vait of New Ulm; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Benjamin and Angela (Hunh) Rathmann; his wife, Linda Rathmann; and his sisters, Sharon Grochow, and Judy Rathmann.
