Robert “Bob” Young was born May 17, 1950 in Mason City, IA to Earl H. and Anna (Boschert) Young. He was the youngest of four children. When he was 6 months old, the family moved to Fairmont, MN where he was raised, graduating in 1969. In high school he was defensive middle guard on a team that was undefeated for 4 years. He boxed Golden Gloves throughout high school, too. He was active in Civil Air Patrol, earning his solo pilots license and participating in the International Air Cadet Exchange.

As the Vietnam War progressed, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. His duty assignment was as a military policeman, a decision that gave direction to the rest of his life. Upon discharge, he enrolled in the law enforcement program at Mankato State College, graduating with honors in 1976. Bob spent 20 years as a police officer in Worthington, MN; 15 as the department investigator. In 1996 he began as a deputy investigator for the Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office, retiring in 2006.

In retirement, Bob decided he needed more. He volunteered as a Reading Corps at the elementary school in New Ulm. He spent 4 years helping children learn to read, and then an additional two years as a technology aid at the school.

Bob married Patricia “Patty” Stone in 1976 and together they had one daughter, Julia. The light of his life was his family, most importantly his grandsons, Ayden and Rorrick for whom he cared for 3 years until his health no longer allowed him to do so.

Bob is survived by his wife, Patty; daughter, Julia; grandsons, Ayden and Rorrick – all of Madelia; sister, Suzanne (Jack) Frost of Wescosville, PA; sister-in-law, Candy (Mike) Hansen of Pflugerville, TX, and brother-in-law, Gregg (Kari) Stone of St. Peter, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Ellen; brother, Jon, and sister-in-law, Pam Thomas.
