Leander Filzen

Leander Filzen, age 93 of New Ulm died Monday, November 20, 2023 at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11am on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Father Gerald Meidl officiating. Burial will follow in the New Ulm City Cemetery, Soldier’s Rest section. Full military honors will be provided by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.

Leander is survived by his daughters, Patti (Derek) Lund of Eyota and Deb (Tony) Hillesheim of New Ulm; sons, Randall (Koni) Filzen of Courtland, Michael (Patty) Filzen of New Ulm, and Brian (Janet) Filzen of New Ulm; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Delores Filzen of Gaylord; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathy Filzen in 2022; siblings, Erwin Filzen, Adeline (Donald) Zangel, Elmer (Marie) Filzen, Doris (Melvin) Schroepfer; brother-in-law, Tom (Mercedes) Hoppe.

Leander Edward Filzen was born October 21, 1930 in New Ulm to Raymond and Cecelia (Kral) Filzen. He was a 1949 graduate of Holy Trinity Catholic school in New Ulm. From 1950-1952 Leander served in the US Army and was stationed in Italy. When he returned home, he met Kathleen Hoppe. They were married June 16, 1956 in New Ulm. The couple was blessed with five children whom together they raised in New Ulm. Leander was employed with Artstone, where he drove truck for over 50 years. Leander loved to be busy, fixing anything he could. He was a quiet, handy man who was always willing to help people. He loved old time music and was a great dancer. Leander enjoyed spending time in his garden in the summer months. He loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren. Leander was a member of the American Legion Post 132, the New Ulm VFW, and Cathedral of the Holy Trinity Church. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him. Blessed be his memory.
