Merlin Henry Fixsen was born May 20, 1931, in Vail Township, Redwood County, Minnesota to Theodore and Agnes (Bernardy) Fixsen. He attended country school in Redwood County and was a 1949 graduate from Wabasso High School. Merlin proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 52-54 during the time of the Korean Conflict where he worked as a machinery mechanic. He was united in marriage to Marlys Windschitl on June 7, 1955, at the Church of the Japanese Martyrs in Leavenworth. This union blessed the couple with three daughters whom together they raised while living in Springfield, rural Wabasso, before eventually settling down in New Ulm. Over his career, Merlin worked for Mathiowetz Construction, farmed, Fuller Brush, Potters Garage, and 3M. While at 3M, Merlin worked in the molding department and was also their fork lift mechanic until his retirement in 1994. Besides his work at 3M, there were a variety of other hobbies that Merlin enjoyed in life. As a man who enjoyed to work with his hands, Merlin was a talented wood carver, as well as water color artist. He shared his talent for auto mechanics by building two cars with 8-inch wheels and 5hp engines in 1957. He also enjoyed the laughs that were shared while bowling with the Prime-Timers in Senior Bowling League. As someone who loved to travel, Merlin was able to see all 50 states, spent many good years at his time share in Branson, Missouri, and was also able to see the sights of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and all of Canada. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm as well as the New Ulm American Legion. Blessed be his memory.
