Eugene Carl Marte was born July 5, 1935 in Staples to Carl and Alberta (McCallan) Marte. He attended country school until 8th grade. In 1955 Gene married his first wife, Darlene, in Staples. They later moved to Jordan where they raised their 6 children. On December 27, 1973, Gene married the love of his life, Phyllis Carey in Sioux Falls. The two made their home in Webster and then in Henderson, until their retirement. They built their retirement home on family property along the Long Prairie River in Staples. They were snowbirds in Needles, California and then bought a home in Fort Mohave, Arizona, where they lived until Phyllis’ passing in 2019. Gene stayed two more years until 2021 when his battle with dementia brought him back to Minnesota. He resided at WoodStone Senior Living until his death. Gene and Phyllis owned Valley Ceramics in Henderson. Over the years, Gene also worked at the creamery in Staples, he cooked on the railroad that ported out of Staples, and had many construction jobs through the years, most recently, Siehndel Construction from 1991-2006. He was a hard worker and finally retired at the age of 74. Gene was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. He found joy in gardening, fishing, mowing the lawn, Farmall tractors, woodworking, touring casinos, and yearly RV trips across the country. His greatest memories were time with his grandchildren. They spent many summers together with him and Phyllis and when Gene moved to WoodStone, they would visit often and take him to his favorite restaurant, Pizza Ranch. Gene was loved dearly and will be deeply missed. Blessed be his memory.

The family would like to thank the staff at WoodStone Senior Living, New Ulm Medical Center, Allina Hospice for the care given to Eugene.
