Stan was born in Long Beach, California, in 1947 to the Rev. Carl and Agnes (Olsen) Sheie. He grew up on Long Island in Uniondale, New York, with his brothers Tim (Mary) Sheie of Anoka and the late Steve (Myrna) Sheie of Portland, Oregon. Stan and his family were avid skiers, sportsmen, builders, and campers throughout their lives.
After graduating Uniondale High School, Stan attended Adelphi University on a full-ride scholarship for lacrosse, earning All-America honors. After earning his master’s degree in physical education, Stan began teaching and coaching football, wrestling and lacrosse for 10 years at Woodland Junior High School and East Meadow High School in Hempstead, New York. Stan continued playing with Long Island Lacrosse Club, winning three national championships.
Stan married Virginia Feder in 1968, with whom he had three children, Marc, Margaret and Sigrid. The family moved from Long Island, New York, to Madelia where he began his second career at Feder Plumbing & Heating, earning his second master’s in plumbing. Stan was involved in Trinity Lutheran Church choir, Madelia Community Theater and served on the school board. He continued his love of lacrosse by coaching at Gustavus Adolphus College, playing with the Twin Cities Lacrosse League, and was a huge part of the growth of lacrosse across generations of players, coaches and teams.
Stan married Karen Taylor Larsen in 1999 and added three stepchildren to the family: Melissa, Heather and Michael. He eventually sold his business and retired early to spend more time building, sailing, golfing and being Grandpa. Stan and Karen enjoyed concerts, theater, good food, camping and traveling the country to visit their children (plus all the adventures along the way!)
When he wasn’t running his annual Bogey Ball Miniature Golf tournament, Stan was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor. Stan faithfully served at Christ The King Lutheran Church as president of the Church Council, longtime member of the Property Committee and sang in the choir. No matter what he did, Stan made all of us laugh and cringe with his dry sense of humor.
With an incredible, adaptive attitude, Stan gracefully defied the odds of pulmonary fibrosis for more than 10 years and was an example of a life well-lived. Stan is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Steve. He is survived by his wife, Karen Larsen Sheie; his children Marc (Jiliane) Sheie of Austin, Texas; Margaret (Jeff) Krull of Carver; Sigrid (John) Sheie of Missoula, Montana; the Rev. Melissa (Eric) Stoller of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Heather Englander of Cleveland, Ohio; and Michael (Sarah) Atkins-Larsen of Missoula; his 10 grandchildren: Grant, Gabriella, Callen, Dane, Tristan, Adam, Quinton, Miles, Emerson, and Rowan; and special family Tyson, Jayda and T.J.
Stan wasn’t a mourning person, so the memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Ulm, with a reception to follow.
Stan requested that any memorial donations to be designated to his favorite charity, CTK Helping Hands Fund at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 1515 North Garden Street, New Ulm, MN 56073, christtheking-newulm.org/.
