Lyle Lochner was born in Grafton Township near Gibbon, Minnesota, on Oct. 4, 1940, to Edward and Hilda Lochner. He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stewart and later confirmed at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Fernando. Lyle grew up on the farm, helping his family farm and raise livestock. He also worked on the family sawmill business during his early years. Lyle attended country school for his first six years. Then, upon schools consolidating, he attended one year at Stewart High School and the rest at Gibbon High School, where he graduated in 1958 (with perfect attendance). Upon graduation Lyle went to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, until he got drafted into the Army. After his time in the service, he went back to the farm. Shortly after, in the spring of 1966, he met the love of his life, Beverly. They were united in marriage on Nov. 12, 1966, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Fernando, Minnesota. After marriage, Lyle and Beverly moved to Springfield, Minnesot. While there, Lyle enlisted in the National Guard and worked at a glass factory in New Ulm. He later moved on and worked as a land surveyor for a few years before going back to his roots and farming for a year in the area. In November of 1972, Lyle moved back to the family farm near Gibbon where he farmed and raised hogs until he retired. Lyle was also a very active member most of his life at St. Matthew’s, including serving several terms on the church council in various roles. He also farmed the church ground from planting to harvest for many years.

Lyle enjoyed being with his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He also liked woodworking and made furniture and other items for various members of the family as well as friends and the church. Farming was always his love, and after retirement he enjoyed helping both his son and son-in-law with field work whenever he got the chance.
