NEW ULM — Fred Groebner, 72, of New Ulm, died on February 22, 2022 at his home from Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). In 2011 he was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) which was a result of being exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam. In January, 2021 he was diagnosed with Myeloidyplasia Syndrome (MDS) which then turned into the AML in August 2021.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 28, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm. Burial with full military honors accorded by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard will follow in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday, and continue from 9-10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home-North Chapel in New Ulm.

Fred was born on April 6, 1949 to George and Irene (Wersal) Groebner in Springfield, MN. He grew up in Wanda, MN until his family moved to New Ulm, MN in 1965. Fred graduated from New Ulm High School in 1967. He entered the Army in March 1968 and served until November, 1970. Fred served 18 months in Vietnam. He married Laura (Laurie) Osborne on May 20, 1972 in Le Center, MN. They were blessed with two sons.
Over the years Fred had several jobs, which included working for Vernie Schwantes at Vernie’s Gulf and Knopke Motors. In 1972 he went to work for Moose (Richard) Kraus at Kraus Standard in which Fred and his wife later purchased. After selling the station to his brother Jerry, he went to work at AMPI as a maintenance mechanic for 18 years. Fred also drove bus for New Ulm bus lines retiring in 2012.
Fred enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He spent many hours in his workshop creating many items from wood. He could make almost anything without a pattern. He would just look at a picture and make it. Many family members and friends were the recipients of his handy work.
Fred is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Laurie Groebner; his sons, Jayme (Geri) Groebner of Hanska and Mike (Sharon) Groebner of New Ulm; grandchildren, Josie, Anthony, and Kaylee Groebner, Zach Groebner; great grandson, Leon; brothers, Ray (Judy) of Milwaukie, OR, Steve (Sherry) and Pat (Diane) of New Ulm; sister & sister-in-law, Judy Zollner of Cohasset and Marianne Groebner of Minneapolis ; mother-in-law, Patricia Osborne; sisters-in-law; Kathy Krocak, Beth McCabe, and Sheila (Ed) Wild; brothers-in-law, Patrick (Carol) Osborne, Rick (Janet) Osborne, and Joe (Trish) Osborne; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bernard, Tony, and Jerry Groebner; nephew, Randyn Groebner; his father-in-law, Ronald Osborne; and brothers-in-law, Kenny Zollner and Paul McCabe.
