She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Burghardt; her parents, Leo and Erna Schuck; her sister, Marge Schuck; and her brother, George Schuck, who was killed in action in the Korean war.
Mary Dorothy Schuck was born March 26, 1935 to Leo and Erna (Radke) Schuck in New Ulm. She graduated from New Ulm High School in 1953 and Mankato State University in 1957. Mary started her career as a high school English teacher. She was a very gifted and eloquent writer who contributed to several local publications throughout her life. On August 29, 1964 Mary was united in marriage to Francis Burghardt at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Ulm. Their union blessed Francis and Mary with 5 children. Mary’s greatest pride and joy were her handful of 5 children and 13 grands. She loved being a Mom and Nana. Mary found many things in life she enjoyed. She baked homemade bread every week for as long as her children can remember. The grandchildren were always greeted with their favorite treat of Mary’s warm homemade bread with peanut butter and honey. While Francis tended the bees, Mary cheerfully sold the honey from their front porch on Broadway. She also helped Francis with nest checks of their Purple Martin colonies at their home. Mary liked shopping for antiques, and both attending and putting on garage sales, which she did for over 35 years. Mary enjoyed hosting family and friends at their home, whether it be coffee and rolls with her close friends or graduation receptions and open houses for her children and spouses who were married out of state. Mary loved New Ulm and the city’s history. Mary had great memories of growing up and living in New Ulm. She remembered how the downtown area changed over the years and could recall many buildings histories. Later in life Mary created her Facebook page “Mary’s Valley Views”, where she enjoyed sharing her memories and observations.
While Mary will be greatly missed, her kindness and compassion for all will never be forgotten. We hold her dear and near in our hearts and memories and find comfort knowing she’s reunited with Francis and other loved ones.
Mary’s family wishes to thank (“take a piece of candy”) Laura, the Resident Assistants, Alissa, and kitchen staff at Ridgeway on German, her Allina Hospice team: Jetta, Kim, Lisa, DeAnna, Deb, Lara, and all who kept her in their thoughts and prayers.
