John Edgar Harmening

CELEBRATING 63 YEARS OF LIFE AND LOVE

John Edgar Harmening was born in Sleepy Eye in October 1957 to Edgar & Marion (Burk) Harmening. He was made a child of God through Holy Baptism a week after his birth. He spent the first ten years of his life in the family home in Sleepy Eye, attending the Head Start program and SE Public Schools. John had the opportunity to live at Bethesda Lutheran Home in Watertown, WI, for the next ten years. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith there in November 1978. His joy in his Savior shines through on all the photos taken on that very special occasion. By then his parents had moved to Grand Rapids, and John moved there to be near them, living in a group home until moving to New Ulm, in late 1989. For 23 years he was an integral part of the New Ulm community, working at various job sites, attending many social/civic functions, and always actively involved in his church, St. Paul’s Lutheran, and the Jesus Cares Program there. John moved to Hope Residence in Belle Plaine, in October 2012 and God’s love continued to shine through him there. He passed into heavenly gloryon September 20th 2021 at the Mayo Hospital in Mankato.

He is survived by his brother, David Harmening (partner Jane Richert), Faribault/Naples, FL; his sisters Ann (James) Zimansky, and Mary (Rev. Boyd) Longshore, all of Colorado Springs, CO; niece Sarah Norway and nephews Charles (Mindy) Norway, James (Laurel) Longshore, Andrew Longshore and Joe Longshore, as well as ten great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by cousins Dennis (Jan) Krueger and Donald (Jan) Krueger. He was preceded in death by his parents.

John was dearly loved by many and especially by his Lord and Savior, whom he loved.

A private committal service took place in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.

The Minnesota Valley Funeral Homes of New Ulm are assisting the family with arrangements at this time.
