Mavis B. Davis

NEW ULM — Mavis B. “Granny” Davis, age 84, of New Ulm passed away peacefully at Abbott Northwestern Hospital on Saturday, July 17, 2021 surrounded by her family.

She was born on April 4, 1937 to Donald and Bernetta (Huiras) Marks in Springfield. She graduated in 1954 from Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s High School. She continued her education at Immanuel St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Mankato, obtaining her LPN degree and worked at Loretto Hospital in New Ulm for 20 years. During her time there, she was also the Director of the Jr. Auxiliary Candy Striper Program, which was funded by the hospital auxillary. She married Victor Davis on Sept. 14, 1957 and together they had three children. Her second career led her into real estate where she worked for 29 years as a real estate agent, retiring from Valley Properties in 2005.

Mavis was well known in the community of New Ulm and Sleepy Eye through real estate, shopping for “deals”, and her acts of kindness by volunteering and donating items to various organizations and fundraisers. She put her heart and prayers into each and every gift basket that she created and donated.

She had a great love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren which she proudly referred to as her legacy. She was the family matriarch and loved spending time babysitting, attending their activities and celebrations, and always focused on creating memories for each of them.

Mavis enjoyed shopping, thrifting, antique collecting, furniture refinishing, collecting jewelry, cooking, gardening, dancing, and card playing. She had a zest for life, making people happy, and supporting people when they needed it. She was a member of the New Ulm American Legion Auxiliary, New Ulm Medical Center Auxiliary, and the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce Willkommen Committee.

Mavis left a big mark in this world and always incorporated kindness in her work, family, and life! She will forever be in our hearts and memories and will surely be missed.

Left to share her memory are her husband of 63 years, Victor Davis, her children Sheri Davis of New Ulm, Gary Davis of San Diego, CA and Mary (Jeff) Hohensee of New Ulm; grandchildren: Jen Verzalik, Laura (Colbey) Leighty, Ellie Hohensee, Rachel Hohensee and Ben Hohensee; great grandchildren: Collin, Carson and Camden Verzalik and Kaden, Luke and Avery Leighty; siblings: Marlene Engelke of Plato, Linda (Doug) Krueger of Glencoe and Dean (Vanessa) Marks of Paris, France along with many cherished nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald Marks and Bernetta Hauser, siblings David Marks and Janis Carlin, sister-in-law Carol Marks and brother-in-law Ralph Engelke.

Please join us in celebrating her life on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 beginning with a 4 p.m. memorial service at the New Ulm Community Center, 600 North German Street, New Ulm. The family will greet guests after the service and welcome all to join them for food and fellowship.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Oak Hills Living Center, Ben J. Siefert American Legion Auxiliary, or donor’s choice.
