Richard Runck

Richard Runck (83) of New Ulm passed away on May 12 at his home with his family at his side. Richard was born in New Ulm and graduated from New Ulm High School. He attended the University of Minnesota where he studied poultry science and he served six years in the Minnesota National Guard. Richard is survived by his wife Barbara of 54 years, daughters AnnaMarie, Amy (Noah Anderson), Lisa (Mike Wieczorek), Sarah (Michael Henricks), and Jessica (Scott Lamkin), two grandsons (Nathaniel and Brendan), and brothers Alan (Helen) and Willis (Kristine). He was preceded in death by his parents, Marguerite and Harold Runck.

Richard was a life-long learner, was always on the go, and carved out his own distinct path in life. He enjoyed spending time outside, was an avid historian of the Brown County area, and had a knack for fixing old vehicles and farm equipment. Most of all Richard enjoyed spending time with his family. He had the unique honor (and challenge) of raising five daughters with Barbara. Through his consistent but gentle guidance, Richard taught them two great lessons in life – to be self-reliant and to follow their passions in life.

Richard will be fondly remembered by his family for his love of nature and his way of finding joy in the simplicities of everyday life. He was an accomplished morel mushroom hunter- a skill that he shared with his daughters (even though he kept the best mushroom stands a secret). He had a soft spot in his heart for imperfect animals (he and Barbara always adopted the three-legged cat or the dog that nobody else wanted). Richard had a musical streak and was known to belt out polka songs with his dog Andy. He had a passion for learning and assisted two of his daughters in the Arctic conducting fieldwork for their research projects. Needless to say, Richard was an eclectic individual whose antics will be greatly missed by his family.

A grave-side service will be held at the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery on Friday, May 21, at 11:30am.

Memorial donations may be made in Richard’s name to a humane society or conservation group of your choice.

Richard’s family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at the Allina Health Hospice for their care and compassion.
