Roger was born September 15, 1940 in Glencoe, MN to Homer and Irene (Gehlen) Hoelz. The family moved to Belle Plaine in 1943 where they owned and operated the Hoelz Flour and Feed Mill. Roger loved playing sports growing up and was a standout athlete and captain in Football, Basketball, and Baseball. After graduating from Belle Plaine High School in 1958, he worked at the feed mill and enlisted in the United States Reserves in 1960 where he spent six years in the Reserves while obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Roger married Mary Helen McCourtney on June 23, 1962. Throughout his professional career, he served in the Army Reserves, was a Scott County Deputy Sheriff, Foreman for Norwesco Plastic Plant, Owner of the Colonial Inn Motel, and Baker for Randall Foods and Hy-Vee Foods.

Roger loved spending time with Helen, his bride for the past 58 years. Together, they had four children who have grown into remarkable adults and professionals due to his stern and religious-based guidance. Roger’s hobbies included reading, watching sports, trivia, traveling, fishing, umpiring, supporting the Franciscan Missionary, visiting with family, and attending his grandkids’ activities and sporting events. Additionally, he enjoyed his many years on the Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church and School Boards. Roger’s priorities in life were religion, family, honesty, principles, and work ethic.
