Franklin Kolander

ARLINGTON — Franklin Kolander, age 87 of Arlington was called to his heavenly home on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 7th at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Arlington with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from Noon until service time Saturday at the church. Kolden Funeral Home of Arlington is handling arrangements. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, face masks and social distancing is required and limited seating is available for the funeral.
Frank was born on May 1, 1933 in Waterloo, Wisconsin to Paul and Meta (Frank) Kolander. He attended St. John’s Lutheran School for his first eight years of education having his father as his teacher the last four. For high school and four years of college he attended Dr. Martin Luther College, New Ulm, Minnesota. He graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.
After graduation he was assigned to teach at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Arlington, Minnesota. In 1957 he was joined in marriage to Joan Bening at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington. Their union was blessed with a daughter and a son. His teaching career of forty one years was in Arlington. During these years he served as principal from 1965 to 1979. He also coached basketball, softball and volleyball. In addition he directed the choir and played the organ.
During these years he was a member of the Minnesota District Board of Support for 24 years, served as Vice president of the State Teacher’s Conference and was a school visitor. After retirement in 1996 he continued playing the organ for church services, directed the choir for some years and then continued singing in the choir, delivered church materials to the shut-ins, and served on the Church Council for six years. He also enjoyed working on his yard and most sports, especially golf.
He is survived by his wife Joan; daughter Lynn Delohery and husband Patrick of Colorado Springs, Colorado; granddaughter Sara Campbell and husband David and great grandchildren Amelia, Peyton and Parker and granddaughter Anna Ludwig of Colorado Springs, Colorado; son Kurt Kolander and wife Jennifer of Madison, Wisconsin; grandsons Samuel and Jakob Kolander of Madison, Wisconsin; brother Kenneth and wife Arline of Appleton, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law Lois Bening of Brooklyn Center, Janet Hansen and husband David of Arlington and Lori Kosse and husband Don of Arlington; nephews Eric and Adam Hansen of Arlington and other relatives and friends. Franklin was preceded in death by his parents and brother Robert.
