Selma H. Kalk Maxwell

FAIRFAX — Selma H. Kalk Maxwell, age 95, of Fairfax, died Friday, May 8, 2020 at the Fairfax Community Home.

Due to current social constraints, a private family graveside service will be held at the Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Wellington Township.

The service will be livestreamed starting at 11 am on Friday on the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home’s Facebook page.

Selma Helen Black was born at her rural home in Wellington Township, Fairfax, Minnesota, on April 9, 1925 to Henry J and Adelia (Kiecker) Black.

Selma married Marvin Kalk on September 1, 1944, at Emanuel Lutheran Church. They lived on the family farm in Wellington Township. They farmed until 1988 when they moved into Fairfax. They shared 47 years of marriage before Marvin’s death in 1991. Selma and Marvin were blessed with three children, Allan, Joan, and Carolyn. Selma was employed at the First National Bank of Fairfax, after her graduation from high school, until her retirement. She was also seasonally employed by Del Monte in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, during the corn canning season, and Hands in Winthrop, Minnesota.

Selma married James Gordon Maxell on September 5, 1998, at Emanuel Lutheran Church. The two of them shared 12 years of marriage and resided in Fairfax. They enjoyed traveling and each other’s companionship until his death in 2011.

Selma was a lifelong member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Wellington Township, where she was a member of the Ladies Aide serving terms as secretary and treasurer. Selma enjoyed bowling, dice and card playing, dancing, traveling, and having pets, especially her little dogs, and her favorite cat, Buzz. She was fascinated with the beauty of owls and she had a unique collection of them.

Selma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She treasured her family more than anything else. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were what brought her the most joy. She considered herself so blessed to see and enjoy spending time with her grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Holidays, birthdays, special occasions, and family gatherings were celebrated together.

Selma is survived by her daughters, Joan (Rich) Forst and Carolyn (Michael) Fahey; Daughter-in-law, Connie Kalk; Grandchildren, Amanda (David) Stahl, Mitchell (Brianne) Forst , Aaron (Jen) Fahey, Heidi (Neal)Hagberg, Russell Forst, Brady Kalk, Kristi (fiancé Alex Nelson) Kalk; Great grandchildren, Jace Forst, Kade Forst, Jax Forst, Ashton Forst, Dessa Forst, Brenden Fahey, Ava Fahey, Madelyn Stahl, Caitlin Stahl, Nathan Hagberg, Nash Hagberg, Nolan Hagberg; Sister, Stella Roepke; James Maxwell family; Sister-in-law, Ruth Kalk; and nieces, nephews, and many cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin in September 1991; son, Allan in February 2010; second husband, James (Gordon) Maxwell in February 2011; brothers-in-law , Norman (Edna) Kalk and Gilbert (Elda) Kalk; sisters-in-law, Evelyn (Henry) Hammershmidt and Irene(Earl) Siekmann; and brothers-in-law, Harold Kalk and Alvin Roepke.
